Insights Disinformation and Misinformation: Ofcom launches Advisory Committee

Ofcom has announced the formation of an ‘Advisory Committee on Disinformation and Misinformation’, as required under section 152 of the Online Safety Act 2023.

The Committee, chaired by Lord Allan of Hallam, will provide advice to Ofcom “about specific areas of [its] work relevant to disinformation and misinformation”. According to its terms of reference, this will include considering:

  1. How providers of regulated services should deal with disinformation and misinformation on such services;
  2. Ofcom’s exercise of its transparency powers to require information from regulated services about a matters relating to disinformation and misinformation;
  3. Ofcom’s exercise of its duties to promote media literacy in relation to countering disinformation and misinformation on regulated services; and
  4. Ofcom’s development of policy in relation to the programme of work on media we trust and value.

The Committee will report directly to the Ofcom Board and must produce a report within 18 months.
