The Queen set out the Government’s legislative plans for the next session of Parliament on 11 May 2021. The following relevant plans were announced:

• to extend 5G mobile coverage and gigabit capable broadband through the Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure Bill;
• to protect freedom of speech through the Higher Education (freedom of speech) Bill to protect against the so-called “cancel culture” allegedly in universities and other higher education establishments;
• to ensure internet safety for all, especially for children, whilst harnessing the benefits of a free, open and secure internet through a draft Online Safety Bill (see item below); and
• to counter hostile activity by foreign states through the Counter-State Threats Bill and the Telecommunications (Security) Bill.
