IPSO has released new guidance to help editors and journalists report on major incidents.

IPSO explains that, based on the Editors’ Code of Practice, the guidance covers three key areas: (i) the reporting of breaking news; (ii) the immediate aftermath of the incident; and (iii) anniversaries. It outlines key questions for journalists to consider and highlights useful case studies.

Key areas covered include:

• striking the balance when approaching and talking to people involved in traumatic events;
• deciding which photographs or footage of graphic scenes to include;
• approaching people involved in the immediate aftermath;
• engaging with the emergency services and hospitals; and
• the importance of accuracy.

The guidance is accompanied by new information for the public on what to expect from the media when they are reporting on a major incident, including details of where to go for help and how IPSO can support them. To read IPSO’s announcement in full and for links to the guidance, click here.
