Expertise UK Media Act

Broadcast media has undergone a rapid process of technological change which has revolutionised the way content is produced and distributed.

In response to these changes, the UK government has passed the Media Act which officially became law in the UK on 24 May 2024. The first major reform of media legislation in over twenty years, the Media Act aims to modernise the UK’s media regulations to ensure they are fit for the digital age.

The Act introduces a range of reforms as to how media services in the UK are regulated.

It covers both traditional broadcast media and emerging digital platforms, aiming to create a level playing field between on-demand programme services and traditional broadcasters by requiring each to be subject to a similar regulatory regime.

The Bill also contains reforms for Channel 4 and provisions to reduce regulatory burdens on commercial radio stations and to protect UK radio’s availability on voice-activated smart speakers.

The Media Act affects a broad range of stakeholders within the media and entertainment sector, including public service broadcasters, digital platforms, sports rights holders and third party content aggregators.

Implementation of the full programme of changes will take place in phases over the next two years – see Ofcom’s roadmap for more details.

The Act will have a significant impact on organisations across the media sector. Our Media Act Hub hosts the latest insight from our experts so you can learn about what the changes mean for your business and stay up to date with the latest developments.
